VRAge VR for GTA V Story Mode

VRAge brings VR support to GTA V Story Mode, letting you experience Los Santos in first person with a VR headset. Look around naturally, aim weapons using your hands, throw punches, grab objects, and interact with vehicle doors and controls.

Your arms and wrists are tracked, with grip-based finger poses for more natural hand movement. The HUD, menus, weapon wheel and phone have also been adjusted to work properly in VR.

You can play using tracked VR controllers, or disable the hand system and use a keyboard or standard gamepad instead. VR settings can be changed through the in-game menu, and you can recenter your view whenever needed.

FEATURES

• Stereo VR rendering with natural head movement and recentering.
• Optional tracked arms, wrist movement and grip-based finger poses.
• One-handed weapon aiming, shooting and reloading.
• Hand-driven punching, object grabbing and collision reactions.
• Interactive vehicle doors, steering wheels, motorcycle handlebars and aircraft cockpit controls.
• Motorcycle trigger acceleration, with optional wrist-twist throttle.
• Automatic crouching when you physically lower your head.
• VR HUD, menu, weapon-wheel and phone support.
• An in-game settings menu for adjusting VR features or disabling the hand rig.
• Keyboard/mouse and standard gamepad support.

CURRENT DEVELOPMENT STATUS

VRAge is still in active development, so some bugs and compatibility issues are expected. Hand tracking, vehicle interactions, performance and fast-motion visuals can still have issues.

You may encounter hand clipping, inconsistent vehicle controls, aiming or audio issues, and occasional visual glitches.

Some features are experimental, and full Story Mode mission compatibility has not yet been verified.

Check the release notes before installing an update for supported hardware, required game versions, current features and known issues.

WHAT YOU NEED

• GTA V Legacy, version 1.0.3889.0. GTA V Enhanced is currently unsupported.
• A PC-compatible VR headset connected through SteamVR.
• Tracked VR controllers for hand interactions. Quest Touch bindings are included.
• Script Hook V and its ASI loader.

INSTALLATION

Close GTA V before installing.

Find your GTA V installation folder.

This is the folder containing GTA5.exe. It is different from the GTA V folder in Documents.

Install Script Hook V.

Download and open the Script Hook V ZIP. From its bin folder, copy these files into the folder containing GTA5.exe:

• ScriptHookV.dll
• dinput8.dll

The included NativeTrainer.asi is optional and is not required for VRAge.

Install VRAge.

Open the VRAge runtime ZIP and extract everything directly into the same GTA V folder. Keep the included folder structure intact.

You should have the following beside GTA5.exe:

• VRAge.asi
• VRAge.ini
• VRAge folder

Prepare the game and headset.

• Disable BattlEye through Rockstar Games Launcher for modded Story Mode.
• Use GTA V's DirectX 11 graphics mode.
• Start SteamVR.
• Connect your VR headset.
• Wake your VR controllers.

Launch GTA V Story Mode.

VR should start automatically. Face forward and press F7 to recenter your view.

If VR does not start, check that SteamVR detects your headset and then press F6 to retry.

USEFUL CONTROLS

Ctrl + F12 — Open VRAge settings
F7 — Recenter your view
F6 — Toggle or retry VR
End — Stop VR and return to desktop play

The VRAge settings menu can also be opened by holding the right Touch thumbstick button, or by holding both thumbstick buttons on a standard gamepad.

To play with a keyboard or gamepad instead of tracked VR controllers, disable Arm rig and Controllers in the VRAge settings menu.

UPDATING VRAGE

Always close GTA V before replacing mod files.

Check the release notes for each version before updating, as requirements, compatibility and features may change between releases.

UNINSTALLING VRAGE

To uninstall VRAge, remove:

• VRAge.asi
• VRAge.ini
• The VRAge folder

Keep shared files such as Script Hook V and dinput8.dll if they are required by other installed mods.

IMPORTANT

VRAge is made for single-player Story Mode only. Do not use VRAge in GTA Online.

Release notes 0.1.58
VRAge 0.1.58 Changes since 0.1.46
- World-door interaction: Added optional hand gripping and opening for eligible unlocked building doors. Available through the in-game menu; some door types remain unsupported.
- HUD optimization: Reduced repeated UI processing and reused rendering resources to cut unnecessary work.
- Smoother VR startup: Moved headset initialization into the background so a disconnected headset doesn’t block GTA’s gameplay script.
- Controller recovery: Improved recovery from failed controller bindings and preserved valid device tracking when action tracking temporarily fails.
- Higher-resolution rendering: Improved resolution.
- Body following: Added bounded camera movement, head-directed body rotation, and small collision-checked room-scale steps on foot.
- Vehicle viewpoint corrections: Reworked motorcycle eye positioning and added seated head-camera attachment across vehicle categories, targeting body clipping and viewpoint separation at high speed.
- Optional motorcycle throttle: Right-trigger acceleration is now the default. Wrist-twist throttle remains selectable and saves between sessions.
- Hand-rig corrections: Consolidated arm targets, restored wrist-tracking settings, and reduced conflicts with GTA’s native arm and weapon-grip systems.
- One-handed shooting and manual support: You can fire with the primary hand alone and deliberately grip the weapon with your other hand for support.
- Weapon-direction improvements: Added measured barrel directions for 223 weapon models and prioritized the actual gun’s geometry when calculating aim.
- Native firing corrections: Fixed weapon identifiers and conflicting firing requests, with better handling of automatic weapons, recharge weapons, and native firing intervals.
- Physical armed crouching: Added native crouched movement and strafing triggered by lowering your head, with an in-game toggle.
- Stability and diagnostics: Improved VR shutdown handling and added measurements for frame timing, controller tracking, and actual arm response.
Known issues: Fast-moving objects can still produce double images. I'm working on making full compatibility for story mode.

VRAge 0.1.99 Changes since 0.1.58
- Expanded VR display and Touch navigation for GTA’s menus, pause screen, map, phone, weapon wheel and scripted interfaces. Added custom 3D controller pointers with clicking, dragging and scrolling.
- Added configurable controller bindings and paged action wheels for vehicle equipment and additional GTA actions, including compatible convertible roofs. (I still need to add the code to make this work)
- Made the resolution higher.
- Reduced repeated finger, bone and memory queries, with unused hand processing skipped when possible.
- Reworked proportional car steering, two-hand steering handover and motorcycle grip retention. Added wheel and handlebar contact fitting for better hand placement.
- Smoothed manual vehicle-door movement and improved grab detection. Vehicle exit can now use GTA’s normal animation without manually opening the door first.
- Added measured cockpit-stick contacts for the Lazer and Hydra, plus helicopter seat settling and recentering changes.
- Added hand-controlled parachuting: chest-pull deployment, individual brake pulls and a two-hand landing flare.
- Added tracked handheld aiming and firing in vehicles where GTA permits drive-by weapons.
- Expanded Story Mode handling for cutscenes, character switching, cover, garages, vehicle transitions, swimming, climbing, ladders, rappelling and native activities.
- Added recovery handling for vehicle-entry camera failures, garage camera transitions and temporary tracking loss.
- Expanded physical melee support to 19 melee weapons. Reworked tracked punches with jabs, hooks, uppercuts, contact-speed damage, glancing-hit handling and native pain voices and physics reactions.
- Adjusted physical crouching, torso following and bounded leaning.
- Reworked one-handed firing and deliberate offhand support. Added a gun-mounted scope prototype with an independently rendered magnified view and controller zoom.
